Simply put, me hearty, it would be true to say that pirates they could be found anywhere there be gold, silver and jewels to steal. They liked stealing these because they be easily passed on or spent anywhere, not like money that had a different currency for each country.
During the Golden Age of Piracy pirates be most often found in the Caribbean.
To start out they would sail the Spanish Main (the ocean between North and South America). Pirates started to make an appearance here when Spain was colonising the Americas, and were regularly shipping the wealth they were stealing back to their homeland. Eventually, though, the Spanish stopped sending their precious cargo on individual ships, choosing instead to gather the ships into a convoy, and in so doing dramatically lessened the success (and amounts) of pirate attacks.
Then, as the amount of their successful attacks in the Spanish Main lessened, pirates focused more on the Indian Ocean. Primarily, due to fact this was part of the route regularly travelled by ships sailing from Europe to the East. This was also an area where many of the Anglo-french pirates chose to settle - for obvious reasons.... more riches.
